I'm pretty sure you have just become my banjo hero. I came across your Secret Life of a Banjo blog a couple days ago when looking for banjo music, and I am blown way. I just bought a banjo and right after new year's and plan to teach myself how to play, and after reading your blog and listening some of your music(which is epic!)I've been making record progress. Thanks for the inspiration!

I do not write fan letters, however when someone does something that enriches your life you should let them know. You have. I listen to folk music a great deal, and to banjo in particular. You playing embodies simple elegance. Pure, direct and honest. It reaches me in a way others have not since Sandy Bull many years past.
So, thank you for doing what you do. My life is the better for it.

Hello Mary and Yazid. I have a student in art class who mentioned that he is learning to play the banjo. I mentioned your name (Mary Z. Cox) as an accomplished player. I listened to several cuts on this website and you really sound good. I've met you at Lake Ella playing with Yazid a year or so ago. I just played a gig at Hawks rise with Yazid last week. Say Hello to Yazid for me. Thanks for the great music and interesting webstie.

Do you play your RB-250 very much any more? I sort of fell into one and like it pretty well for frailing (never figured out why I need to drop thumb yet). A little dry sounding but louder enough to play in a group setting. Your Vintage Banjo CD is my favorite.

Hi Mary,

I'm a friend of Lo & Mary Gordon, teaching mountain dulcimer out of their shop these days. I noticed that you're at John C Campbell's April 12. We do an annual Dulcimer Day the following weekend in Brevard (18th) - would you be interested? You could do a combined banjo/dulcimer day if you prefer.

Thanks,
Don Burger

Hi Mary. I heard that you were in Mountain View AR and had a jam with my friends Lukas and Martin. Sorry I missed it. Do you still have your banjo basset? I have a basset hound pup name Roscoe Holcomb Ryan. I went to Swannanoa last summer but am using this summer just to practice all the great stuff I've gotten at camps the last few years. It's enough to last a lifetime....well maybe not!Have a nice summer

After the Albuquerque Folk Festival, the Muddy River String Band retrieved their box of CDs from the sales table. Inside the box was a CD that was not ours. Everyone commented on the mystery CD, and finally showed it to me. That was when I realized that you had placed your CD in our box! I was very touched that you would do that. I can't wait to hear you again and play some banjo 'cello duets. Soldier's Joy Waltz and Angeline the Baker, my favorites!

Jill,
I think those tenor bnjos are tuned and played more like a mandolin. They are played alot with Celtic Music--so I would look for a tenor banjo class at an Irish or Celtic type of workshop or camp. :)

Hello James,
Yes, we are on itunes and about 60 other digital download sources. Just type in my name on itunes and the CDs will come up on the store.
Tab books have simple tab to the tunes on the CD with historical and playing notes and historical pix--no music notation--but I think you will find them enjoyable and fun. :)
Best wishes,
Mary Z. Cox
